Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground on Deaton Family Home

Local Manufacturer Donates Funds, Products, and Volunteer Hours to Support Family of Seven

Piqua, OH – June 24, 2025 — Clopay Corporation, North America’s largest residential and commercial garage door manufacturer and a major local employer, is teaming up once again with Habitat for Humanity of Miami & Shelby Counties to help build a brighter future for a local family in need.

A groundbreaking ceremony held today on Manier Avenue in Piqua kicked off construction of a new five-bedroom home for Cherrish Deaton and her six children, three of whom have special needs. This marks the fourth home Clopay has sponsored in the region over the past five years. The company is contributing $160,000 toward the project and will also donate a custom garage door manufactured at its nearby Troy facility.

In addition to financial support, Clopay employees will volunteer their time to help install the garage door, and the company’s “sister brands,” AMES, ClosetMaid, and Hunter fans, will supply lawn and garden tools, organization systems, and ceiling fans to make the home more functional and energy-efficient.

For Deaton, an EMT who has worked in the Greater Dayton area for over a decade, the home represents more than just a fresh start—it’s a dream coming true. After moving to Miami County with the help of the YWCA and Ohio Domestic Violence Network, she’s now halfway through the 200 volunteer hours required to qualify for Habitat’s program. Once the home is complete, she’ll assume a 20-year, no-interest mortgage.

“This is a huge step forward for my family,” Deaton said at the groundbreaking. “I can’t wait to give my children a safe, stable place to grow up.”

The home is the second of three planned for this revitalized stretch of Manier Avenue. Habitat’s Executive Director Scott Barr emphasized the impact of Clopay’s continued support.

“Clopay is not only the largest employer in our community, they are incredibly generous,” Barr said. “Their involvement—financially, with product donations, and with boots on the ground—sets a powerful example of what it means to be a good neighbor.”

Local officials and Habitat volunteers joined Weldon, Barr, and the Deaton family at the ceremony. Construction is expected to begin in July and wrap up by year’s end.
